Wandering and seeing. The hope of humanity in chaos.
Cécilia Andrews’ solo exhibition “Wondering and Looking” is being held at Gallery 38 in Jingumae, Tokyo. She was born in Chile and is now based in France. She grew up under Chile’s military dictatorship, but her surroundings were close-knit and liberal. Her life began with such a “beautiful childhood,” and the contradiction of the cruelty that politics brings. Her work appears to be a journey of colliding opposites and searching for a neutral point.

Her fragmented depictions of human forms—hands, heads—are not portraits, but symbols. They question how humans can harbor deep compassion, profound ignorance of others, and diversity. Through this tension, she seeks harmony in chaos.
Materials like braille paper and embossed aluminum question the limits of sight. These textured surfaces ask: Are we truly seeing, or merely looking? In reaching out—literally or metaphorically—we begin to perceive differently, perhaps more fully.
Elegant and philosophical, this show asks, “What is the new harmony?”
